A Heart for Service: How One Military Spouse Built a Career with Purpose

Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) supports military spouses at every stage of their career journey.
For many military spouses, professional success doesn’t follow a traditional path. It can look like a remote role that moves with a family, a flexible position that supports caregiving responsibilities, or contract work that creates space for continued learning.
For Army National Guard spouse Megan Rowley, success is defined by one guiding principle: service to others.
Navigating the Challenges of Military Life
Over 13 years as a military spouse, Megan experienced frequent moves and often managed household responsibilities on her own, making a consistent career path difficult.
But like many military spouses, she didn’t let those challenges limit her growth. Instead, she found ways to keep learning, building skills, and showing up for her community.
Driven by a genuine desire to give back, Megan served as a military family readiness leader and volunteered with several military service organizations. Through these experiences, she discovered a passion for community engagement and supporting military families.
Her journey highlights an important truth: volunteering isn’t just about giving back—it can also be a powerful career strategy. For military spouses navigating resume gaps or career pivots, strategic volunteer roles can help build in-demand skills, demonstrate leadership, and expand professional networks across duty stations.
Turning Passion into Purpose
One issue that deeply resonated with Megan was military food insecurity. Determined to make an impact, she began advocating for an on-base food pantry at Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling (JBAB).
To strengthen her ability to lead this effort, Megan pursued a fellowship with Dog Tag Bakery and earned a Certificate in Business Administration from Georgetown University.
“The fellowship and the certificate program strengthened both my skills and my resolve to see an on-base food pantry open up at JBAB,” Megan shared.
Her commitment eventually led her to HillVets LEAD, where she connected with an HOH military spouse program leader and learned more about the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s work advancing military-connected employment.
“Those experiences helped clarify my long-term vision: advancing quality-of-life improvements for military-connected individuals and families,” Megan said.
The Power of Connection
With her mission solidified, Megan knew she needed the right network and resources to take her advocacy further. She attended the HOH Amplify program and Military Spouse Employment Summit in Washington, D.C., where introductions from the HOH team helped her work to advance the JBAB food pantry initiative.
“Those connections proved lasting and impactful,” Megan said. “They strengthened my work advocating around military food insecurity and ultimately helped lead to my role at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.”
A Career Built on Service

Following Amplify, Megan’s momentum continued. She was accepted into the University of San Francisco’s Master’s in Public Leadership program as a Newmark Fellow. After two years of dedicated advocacy, her vision became a reality when the JBAB Food Pantry officially opened its doors.
Around the same time, HOH connected her to an open role at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, an opportunity that aligned directly with her passion and experience. She was hired.
Today, Megan continues to drive change for military-connected communities while pursuing her master’s degree and supporting the operation of the food pantry she helped bring to life.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to keep service to others as the through-line of this journey,” she shared.
Creating a Lasting Legacy
Megan’s story is a powerful reminder that a military spouse career path doesn’t have to follow a straight line to be successful. By turning volunteer experiences into measurable leadership and leveraging the right networks, she built a career rooted in purpose and impact.
Her journey also offers a practical roadmap for other military spouses: strategic volunteering can help bridge resume gaps, build transferable skills, and open doors to meaningful employment.
HOH is proud to support military-connected job seekers at every stage of their careers, turning their unique experiences, including volunteer work, into lasting careers.
