As emerging technologies like artificial intelligence reshape the workforce, the military-connected community is uniquely positioned to help build what comes next. Transitioning service members, veterans, military spouses, dependents, and caregivers bring the resilience, adaptability, and mission-driven mindset the modern workforce requires. Programs like the Military Datacenter Pathway-VETS (MDP-VETS), powered by Microsoft, act as a bridge, connecting this talent to rapidly growing industries through targeted training, professional networking, and employment pathways.

Pathways to Emerging Careers

As AI moves from experimentation to widespread use, demand for physical infrastructure like datacenters is rapidly increasing. These facilities power the digital economy and require a highly skilled workforce to operate and maintain critical systems.

Recognizing this need, Microsoft and Hiring Our Heroes (HOH) collaborated to develop the Military Datacenter Pathway-VETS (MDP-VETS) pilot program. Designed specifically for transitioning service members and recent veterans with backgrounds in mechanical, maintenance, HVAC, or electrical fields, this program offers a direct route into the modern technology ecosystem.

Through a paid, eight-week course, participants build on military-honed abilities like operational discipline, adaptability, and leadership, while gaining specialized skills to monitor, troubleshoot, and sustain critical systems in datacenters nationwide as a Critical Environment Technician.

The first cohort provided 11 transitioning service members and veterans with direct employment opportunities at a Microsoft datacenter in Phoenix, AZ.

Mission Ready for the AI Economy

U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard veteran Ashley De Leon participated in the first cohort of the MDP-VETS program. She recently began her full-time career with Microsoft as a Critical Environment Technician.

After 13 years of military service, Ashley was ready for a new challenge. Having built a military career on mission readiness, operational excellence, and solving complex challenges under pressure, she was looking for a civilian role that would allow her to leverage that hard-earned experience. She discovered the MDP-VETS program through HOH’s Hot Jobs newsletter and was drawn to the opportunity to play a hands-on role in the evolving datacenter industry.

“We are in a major transition with how people live and work,” Ashley explained. “I’m excited to be part of the AI revolution, where access to unlimited knowledge can empower, guide, and help raise everyone up. Microsoft is leading the charge; their mission is ‘to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more.’ I cannot wait to see where this evolution of technology leads.”

During her time in the MDP-VETS program, Ashley sharpened her technical skills, built confidence in an emerging field, and proved that the same operational mindset developed in the military directly applies to critical environments in tech.

“The fellowship challenged me to grow and pushed me beyond my comfort zone,” Ashley shared. “It opened the door to a career where I can continue serving a greater mission, this time through innovation, reliability, and infrastructure that powers the world.”

At the conclusion of the fellowship, Microsoft invited Ashley to interview for a full-time position, an opportunity she felt ready to pursue because of the preparation and mentorship she received throughout the experience.

“The program helped me bridge the gap between military service and the private sector by equipping me with technical knowledge, interview preparation, mentorship, and the confidence to step into an entirely new industry,” Ashley said.

Ashley’s hard work and perseverance led to a full-time job offer with exciting opportunities for advancement in a high-demand industry. As she embarks on her new career with Microsoft, she is proud to bring her military values into the field and is energized to support the technology that keeps today’s digital world running.
