Standing Out from the Crowd: How One Navy Spouse Found Confidence in Her Career Pursuit

Facing a dip in confidence during her job search, Navy spouse Brittani Garcia turned to Hiring Our Heroes’ many resources to distinguish her skills and find her next career opportunity.
An Unexpected Career Shift
Earlier this year, Brittani unexpectedly found herself back on the job market because of a company acquisition. Although she had the formal education and skills to succeed, she quickly realized the job market was inundated with qualified candidates. To stand out, she knew she needed to highlight her unique strengths and differentiate her expertise.
“Between my numerous experiences due to moving every three years and a competitive job market, I found myself questioning my ability, my value, and my success in the employment landscape,” Brittani shared.

Discovering Hiring Our Heroes
That’s when a friend recommended HOH. Brittani began exploring the organization’s wide range of employment resources tailored to the military spouse community. Her first step was attending a webinar about the Military Spouse Fellowship Program, where she discovered Amplify, a two-day career prep workshop.
“I attended [the virtual] Amplify and was taken aback by the outpouring of energy and support,” Brittani said. “I was energized by it and reminded that my experiences bring value to companies, particularly as a military spouse.”
Putting New Tools into Action
Over the following seven weeks, Brittani used the tools she learned from Amplify, various webinars, and other HOH resources to update her resume, network with others in her field, build her personal brand, increase her reach on LinkedIn, and prepare for interviews. Shortly thereafter, she was offered a Military Spouse Career Accelerator Pilot (MSCAP) fellowship.
“I really appreciate all the time, organization, and thoughtfulness that goes into every event at Hiring Our Heroes,” she said. “Between Amplify, webinars, networking opportunities, and various programming through the MSCAP fellowship, including Candidate Prep Day and Tuesday Power hours, I’ve been able to build my confidence, demonstrate my value, and secure my next employment opportunity!”

From Fellowship to Fulfillment
Despite the challenges of job hunting as a military spouse, Brittani remained resilient and proactive. She sought out the resources she needed to build her confidence, drew on her community of military spouses for encouragement, and empowered herself to rise above the competition.
All her hard work paid off. Following her MSCAP fellowship, Brittani accepted a position as a Training and Instructional Design professional at GuidePoint Security University. In her new role, she creates and streamlines comprehensive courses and learning materials, ensuring the delivery of accurate and relevant content.
