Instead, one of the most significant barriers is connecting with employers who understand the unique experiences military spouses bring and can recognize their potential beyond a nontraditional career path.
For military-connected individuals like U.S. Navy spouse Brandon Hayes, the reality is clear: when given the chance to demonstrate their abilities, they don’t just succeed; they thrive.
The Missing Piece
Throughout his most recent job search, Brandon had one recurring thought: he just needed someone to give him a chance to prove himself.
“As a military spouse, finding a steady and meaningful job is honestly difficult,” Brandon shared. “My journey has really been about finally getting the opportunity to prove myself.”
Knowing he could excel if given the opportunity, Brandon spent almost a year navigating the job market. During this time, he realized he needed strategic support to find opportunities and bridge the gap between his potential and prospective employers. That realization led him to Hiring Our Heroes (HOH).

“My experience with Hiring Our Heroes was life-changing,” Brandon said. “It gave me the opportunity I had been looking for and connected me with people who believed in me.”
Brandon took full advantage of HOH’s resources. He earned a Digital Marketing & E-commerce Career Certificate through HOH’s partnership with Google, strengthening his technical skills and his competitiveness in a fast-paced field.
He also attended Amplify, where he learned how to better showcase his abilities, communicate his value to employers, and build his professional confidence. Along the way, he received personalized guidance from HOH’s military spouse program team, as well as support from a broader community that reminded him he wasn’t alone in his journey.
Finding the Perfect Match
Through that personalized employment pathway, Brandon had the opportunity to join the California Center for the Arts, Escondido (CCAE) team as a Marketing Coordinator. It didn’t take long for him to find his stride.
He quickly made an impact, taking on increased responsibility, expanding his contributions, and demonstrating his capabilities. In turn, CCAE recognized his value and extended a full-time job offer, which he proudly accepted.
“CCAE ended up being the right fit,” Brandon explained. “I stepped into a marketing role supporting multiple departments and quickly took on more responsibility. Being matched with an organization that trusted me to jump in and contribute right away made a huge difference in my confidence. In less than a year with the organization, I was able to grow audiences, expand outreach, and improve how we approach marketing overall.”
The Lasting Impact
Today, Brandon’s career is on an upward trajectory. In addition to excelling in his role at CCAE, he has built a strong network of professional connections that has opened the door to contract work with globally recognized brands such as Sephora and Amazon Prime Video.
His talent and dedication have also been recognized within the community. Recently, Brandon was honored with the Rising Nonprofit Leader Award from The Good For Others Foundation, a testament to his impact and leadership.
“This experience really showed me what can happen when given a real chance,” Brandon shared. “Hiring Our Heroes helped me turn a difficult job search into a full-time role where I am still growing today, and I am really grateful for that.”
