Military spouse unemployment is currently four times higher than the national average. Leaders in the public sector have increasingly been stepping up to tackle this issue head-on. Our founding coalition partners understood the need to address the issue and decided to take the lead in attacking the issues of military spouse employment directly.
Organizations can make a commitment in two ways: commit to hire a certain number of military spouses and/or commit to track military spouse hires. With each commitment, organizations will update their hires quarterly via the Report Your Hires form on this website.
A military spouse includes anyone who has been impacted by their spouse’s military service, including spouses or former spouses from all five active duty services whether the service member is active, retired, reserve, or National Guard.
Your organization will receive a confirmation email that includes a draft press release created as a template for your own distribution, a “We Committed” sticker for your website, and a social media toolkit. Your organization’s name will appear on our Committed Companies list. After making an official commitment, you will submit a quarterly report of any military spouse hires. Once you begin inputting those quarterly reports, you will receive a “We Hired” sticker for your website.

Once you commit to hiring a certain number of military spouses and/or tracking your hires, we will display your company’s name (no logo) on this website. Any company proprietary information pertaining to commitments, reporting, or other data collected during this initiative will be kept in an internal database at Hiring Our Heroes.

Military spouses are unemployed at a rate of 16%, over four times the rate of their civilian counterparts. The issue of military spouse unemployment and underemployment significantly impacts the retention and readiness rates of our all-volunteer force; ultimately making spouse employment an issue of national security.
