Talking about Toyota’s Military Technician Education Network

Launched in early 2019 as a pilot program at Toyota’s North American headquarters in Plano, Texas, the M-TEN Automotive Technician Apprenticeship Program trains transitioning service members to become automotive technicians. M-TEN participants take 12 weeks of instructor-led training prior to being deployed to a Toyota or Lexus dealership of their choice to serve as an apprentice.

Applications for the 2020 cohort are currently being accepted and reviewed by a team at Hiring Our Heroes. Toyota will host classes in two new locations – Austin, Texas and Jacksonville, Florida – in 2020.

On this episode of the Hiring Our Heroes Sitrep podcast, Johnnie Garlington, Senior Manager of Technical Training and T-TEN at Toyota Motor North America, and Eric Eversole, president of Hiring Our Heroes and vice president at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, share how the M-TEN program provides career opportunities for transitioning service members, reservists, and veterans as automotive technicians at one of 1,500 Toyota or Lexus dealerships in the United States.

Listen in as we discuss the M-TEN application process and why service members with an aptitude and a passion for automotive technology should consider this opportunity.

Top Takeaways from “Talking about Toyota’s Military Technician Education Network”

1. M-TEN is the acronym for Military Technician Education Network. M-TEN is a partnership between Hiring Our Heroes and the Department of Labor.

“We take active-duty service members, regardless of their MOS, and if they have an aptitude and a passion for working on cars, through the M-TEN program, we provide them the basic skills to be a successful technician for a Toyota or Lexus dealership.” — Eric Eversole, President of Hiring Our Heroes

2. There is a demand for skilled automotive technicians at Toyota and Lexus dealerships.

“Currently, the automotive industry is facing serious challenges keeping up with the demand for skilled automotive technicians due to technician attrition and increased service demand in our dealerships. M-TEN is a great program that honors our military community with jobs as automotive technicians while addressing a business need – specifically the skilled automotive technician shortage.”  — Johnnie Garlington, Senior Manager of Technical Training and T-TEN at Toyota Motor North America

Listen in as we discuss the M-TEN program and how this 12-week intensive training puts transitioning service members on a path for success.

3. If you are a transitioning service member interested in the M-TEN program, submit your application today.

“Get it done sooner rather than later. We have an approaching deadline of November 1. This is a competitive process. We are looking for the very best to be part of this intense training program.” — Eric Eversole, President of Hiring Our Heroes

4. The M-TEN program manager matches candidates with dealerships where they can thrive post-fellowship.

“That’s really important because most dealerships, especially the Toyota and Lexus dealerships, are like families. And they want to make sure that beyond just having the technical skills that you are going to fit in and be a good productive member of that family.”  — Eric Eversole, President of Hiring Our Heroes

5. The program concept was developed by Joe Myers, Technician Development Manager at Toyota. Joe, who currently manages Toyota’s industry leading T-TEN program, saw an opportunity to leverage the T-TEN program in a modified version to provide automotive technician training to transitioning service members, reservists, and veterans. T-TEN and M-TEN have the same basic objective of providing skills-based training coupled with an internship or apprenticeship to build technical skills.

“The M-TEN program is one of many examples of Toyota’s long-standing commitments to honor our military community with careers in the automotive industry.” — Johnnie Garlington, Senior Manager of Technical Training and T-TEN at Toyota Motor North America
